Isuzu is expanding its popular D-Max ute range, bringing increased equipment and a cheaper entry-level model.

Since its launch in 2020 the new Isuzu D-Max has quickly become one of the best selling utes in the country and is only outsold by long-term favourites the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

Headlining the updated line-up is the arrival of a new base two-wheel drive cab chassis version that is priced from $31,200 (before on-road costs), which is about $2000 more affordable than the current cheapest D-Max.

This model is cheaper because it uses a smaller 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine that makes 110kW and 350Nm compared to the current base version’s bigger 3.0-litre diesel unit producing 140kW and 450Nm.

The new engine is available in two-wheel drive SX grade only, and despite its small size has handy performance with a braked towing capacity up to 2800kg when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or up to 3000kg when matched to a six-speed auto. Most dual-cab utes can tow up to 3500kg.

Isuzu is also adding two new mid-spec cab chassis variants to its local line-up, expanding the options for tradies searching for a four-wheel drive dual-cab ute with a steel tray.

The Japanese maker has upgraded the standard equipment on current grades. The range-topping X-Terrain model scores heated front seats, heated door mirror, anti-dazzling rear view mirror and a factory fitted towbar.

The LS-U+ grades now come with leather accented upholstery, electronically adjustable driver seat, heated front seats and keyless entry. It also scores a tub liner and tow bar.

The upgraded D-Max is expected to arrive in Australia at the start of 2022.

Isuzu has faced the same supply issues as most other car brands with waiting lists stretching back several months and the brand as guaranteed it won’t change the price of any order placed before the end of July this year and may even upgrade orders at no additional charge to the 2022 model if the orders stay unfulfilled.
