Based on the full-sized Genesis G80, a car that delivers space and luxury to rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for a fraction of the cost, the Electrified G80 swaps turbocharged petrol engines for electric power.
Motors in the front and rear of the new limo deliver a combined 272kW and 700Nm, enough for the big sedan to rush silently to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds.
An 87.2kWh battery returns a claimed 520 kilometres of range and can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 22 minutes at ultra-rapid charging stations.
As the top model of the Genesis range, the Electrified G80 is loaded with equipment.
Drivers sit on a leather-lined chair with 18-way electric adjustment, surrounded by a 19-speaker stereo and an array of ambient lighting options.
Back seat customers have heated seats, twin digital displays, and a control panel for the stereo and three-zone climate control.
Other tech includes an enormous 14.5-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, smart keys, an electric sunshade and more.
It builds on Genesis’ promise to deliver impressive customer service by adding the choice of a free home charger setup or five years of free electricity at public Chargefox sites to a package that already includes a five-year warranty with five years of free servicing.
The catch is that the battery-powered Genesis is not cheap.
Priced from $145,000 plus on-road costs, the fully-loaded machine is significantly more expensive than petrol cousins that start at about $85,000 plus on-road costs with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or about $101,000 plus on-roads with a twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel-drive.
Customers who want an electric Genesis luxury car with a little less space could settle for the smaller, SUV-shaped GV60 EV. The smaller model starts from $103,700 plus on-roads in two-wheel-drive trim, or $110,700 with all-wheel-drive.
It also has the advantage of being built from the ground up as an EV, unlike the G80, which was originally designed for internal combustion engines and modified to fit electric motors.
