A Woolworths shopper’s thrifty act has been labelled “selfish” by social media users, after she posted on Facebook about nabbing “every single packet” of marked-down fish at her local store.
The woman shared a photo of her trolley, filled with packages of fish, to the social media platform’s Markdown Addicts Australia page.
Alongside the image she wrote she’d bought “every single packet” of premium salmon and trout – which had been marked down from $11 to just $1.10.
But the move divided other shoppers in the page – prompting some to brand her “greedy” and “selfish”.
“Imagine being that selfish. How embarrassing,” one woman commented.
Another agreed, remarking: “Certainly some greedy people around these days.”
“Yes good price, but wouldn’t it be nice to leave some for someone else?” wrote a third.
“Couldn’t agree more. Greed seems to take over,” said another.
“Putting a few packets back could have fed another family for the night but no one thinks of others these days.”
Others, however, applauded the mum’s “impressive” cost-cutting.
“Love a shelf clearer as you saved that department from having to put it down as dumped when no one else buys it,” one shopper said.
“Love your work.”
“Excellent score, better eaten than in landfill. Freeze that and eat happy for days,” a second commented.
But some were quick to warn her to check the quality of the fish before cooking.
“I only ever bought salmon once when it was marked down and when I opened it, it was rotten,” they said.
“Too close to use by date for my liking, especially fish.”
“Be careful it may not be able to be frozen, need to read the packaging,” wrote another.
