When is Bluey set? Fans are sharing their theories and some minds are being blown

Some claim they can be easily debunked. What are your thoughts?

Despite having no new Bluey episodes hit our screens for over a year now, fans are continuing to come up with new theories.

Some we may figure out soon with a new movie, and potentially a new season, set to come out in the not too distant future. But, others we’ve been able to debunk straight away - and this might be one of them.

When does it all happen?

A Bluey fan has taken to the Adult Bluey Fans Facebook group to share their unknowingly controversial theory.

“So I've had an ongoing theory for awhile now and the Surprise episode has made me lean more into it. I believe Bluey takes place during the early 2000s,” they shared in the post.

“Reason 1: Bandit talks about growing up in the 80s as a kid. He could have been born late 70s early 80s. That would put him in his mid/late 20s during the early 2000s. Which is average age for a dad with kids their age.

“Reason 2: The technology. In this latest episode people talk about it jumps into 'the' future but I believe it jumps to current time. All their electronics are current. They have quite a bit of what looks like Amazon products; an echo dot, an echo show, and a ring doorbell. They also have a robot vacuum (that's not working all that great) and a digital picture frame.

“In most episodes at most we see them using their tablet (like in Bob Bilby) and leappads were developed in early/mid 2000s. And of course creators have artistic license.”

“Absolutely agree!”

Many commenters on the post agreed with the poster, saying they’d been thinking the same thing.

“Love this,” said one commenter.

“Absolutely agree! I am an 81 baby! Had my first baby in 2004 at 23. She turns 21 this year. So bandit would be about my age give or take a few years!!” said another.

“I agree that I think it's set earlier, as the "future" technology is very similar to what we have today,” a third agreed.

“Cool theory!!” said another.

“I was thinking this myself since Chattermax is similar to a 1998 Furby,” another person pointed out.

“They may have waited to have kids!”

However, just as many disagreed with the theory, with many stuck on the fact that they assumed Bandit and Chili would be older.

“Bandit is a doctor, it takes a while to get through the schooling for that. Being the case, they may have waited to have kids,” one commenter said.

“I think Bandit and Chili are in their 40s, they have a more put together figured life out vibe than late 20s usually do. And we know Chili had some fertility problems so it would make sense they had children in their mid 30s instead of their 20s,” another suggested.

“The average age for a first time Mom in Australia is 29.8 which means there are definitely older parents out there. I was 40 and my husband was 44 when our 9 year old was born. Bandit and Chili were still in their 30s with the girls,” said a third.

Others weren’t so sure that the technology and settings in the show fit the mid-2000’s either.

“I would agree if it wasn't for the smart phones and tablets the family uses,” said one commenter.

“My only thought is the flossing episode… I love the idea of it being set in the early 2000s because thats when I grew up, but the episode with flossing (the dance move) shatters that theory for me,” said another.

“Faceytime squashes this hypothesis for me. Nice try tho!” a third said.

“The animated Brisbane sky line has buildings constructed post 2017,” said another.

Debunked!

Unfortunately for believers of this theory, it can be debunked with one simple image.

In one of the Minisodes released last year, titled Browny Bear, Bandit’s exact date of birth can be seen on his drivers licence - October 25, 1978.

If Bluey is set in the present day, that would make him 46 years old, and given that the driver’s licence is seen to be issued in 2022 and will expire in 2025, it would be safe to assume that this is the case.

However, the series has been going for 6 years now and as far as we know, Bluey and Bingo have only had one birthday since then - so who really knows!
