We tried fried eggs in crumpets so you don't have to

Can you really have crumpets with something other than honey? We put the viral recipe to the test.

When it comes to breakfast, it can be easy to let yourself get into a rut, making and remaking quick recipes you know you love day after day.

A bowl of cereal. Overnight oats. Eggs on toast. Crumpets with honey.

But, could the ultimate breakfast mean switching things up a little bit? We put it to the test.

“I was always told that this was normal, but…”

Now, I’m not that big a fan of crumpets myself, but one of the main reasons for that has been the restricted list of things that feel acceptable to put on them.

If it’s not honey, or jam at a push, you’re basically committing a war crime.

That’s why this TikTok left us all with our jaws on the floor.

“I was always told that this was normal, but apparently it’s not,” @whosaidmoon said in her video.

“Apparently you’re not meant to put eggs with crumpets. I showed two people that I cut the middle out of these, then put eggs in the middle and fry them, and apparently I’m a sociopath.”

A sociopath? Maybe not. But a rule breaker? I’d say yes - and the comments agreed.

“Crumpets are only for honey!!” said one person.

“Crumpets are for sweet things,” said another.

“No that's wrong,” a third agreed.

Let’s try it!

For the sake of giving this creator a fair shot, I had to try this one myself.

It’s just a weird version of Toad in the Hole… right??

Creating this is simple, and you can find our full recipe here.

I used an egg cup to carve out a hole in the two crumpets before popping them in an oiled pan, top down. Then, I flipped them and cracked an egg inside each (a too-big egg, clearly) before cooking them until they were done.

The whole process probably took 10-15 minutes, and resulted in a pretty yummy breakfast.

Soooo… is it as gross as it looks?

Short answer, not at all!

I think it ended up being far better than I expected it to be - a nice blend of sweet and savoury!

I ended up flipping one of the crumpets as a trial, and although the egg wasn’t quite as runny, it made it more practical to eat because you could pick it up.

As for whether I would do it again, I don’t think so, only because it takes far longer than just scrambling or drying an egg. But, I think if you’re cooking with kids, it could be a fun and tasty alternative to switch it up a bit, especially with the inside circles cooked to dip, and some barbeque sauce on the side.
