Reaching speeds of 105km/h across 1.2km of track, Dreamworld’s new Steel Taipan rollercoaster has finally opened to thrillseekers.
The $32 million ride has been a work in progress since August 2019 before the park closed the following year due to the pandemic.
But now, the massive orange attraction is up and running, with its grand opening falling on Dreamworld’s 40th anniversary.
As the southern hemisphere’s first ever triple launch coaster featuring the world’s first rear spinning seats, nicknamed the Tailwhip, Dreamworld CEO Greg Yong said it was the theme park’s biggest ever investment.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to thank our locals for their ongoing support, as well as an unbeatable experience for our long-awaited interstate tourists to enjoy during their Gold Coast travels,” Mr Yong said.
“As our biggest ever investment, we’re confident that we’ll help all our guests make unforgettable memories on Steel Taipan this summer.”
Construction of the ride has supported 200 Gold Coast trade jobs and will continue to generate 30 ongoing operational work opportunities.
Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe said the Steel Taipan was a significant vote of confidence in tourism on the Gold Coast.
“Dreamworld’s Steel Taipan adrenaline ride is predicted to bring an extra 250,000 thrillseekers a year to the Gold Coast, generating $30 million for visitor economy which is terrific news for tourist operators,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
