Where to find the best eggs Benedict on the Gold Coast

If you’re searching for the best eggs Benedict in Queensland, the search could be over. Find out which Gold Coast cafe dishes out the best.

Eight foods that should not be refrigerated

This year I’ve eaten so many incarnations of eggs Benedict, hollandaise almost runs through my veins and, no doubt, my arteries are a little narrower.

They had me at ‘breakfast cocktails’

Brisbane cafe breaking all the brekky rules

Is this Brisbane’s best value cafe?

But the endless search to find the best in Queensland has led me to new cafe Common Ground in Burleigh. Opening on June 15, the outdoor eatery takes the spot of the short-lived Burleigh Co-Op, just a baguette bounce down the road from hugely popular Paddock Bakery on the Gold Coast.

Owned by Euan and Bella Lovell (one half of brilliant bar Fig & Frankie’s in Broadbeach) and Matt Tranter, the largely outdoor eatery is a simply gorgeous spot to sit on a sunny winter’s day. The paved courtyard shaded by sails and umbrellas and wrapped in vines and hedges.

Staff are warm and welcoming as diners order at the counter topped with house-baked sweets and croissants from Currumbin’s Fuel Bakehouse, and surrounded by loaves from The Bread Social in Tweed, jars of condiments made on site and bouquets of dried flowers.

Like at Fig & Frankie’s, the food is modest but elevated through both technique and ingredients.

Menu items run from whipped ricotta and avo toast to truffled honey mushrooms, as well as roasted pumpkin and kale with cashew cheese on sourdough for the vegans.

The chilli jam scramble ($18) features two slices of nutty seeded toast spilling over with just-set scrambled eggs, a crumbling of goat’s cheese and an onion-strewn sweet chilli jam that hums ever so gently with heat. Very nice.

But it’s the aforementioned eggs Benedict ($19) that promises to become the new venue’s

signature.

Coming with your choice of smoked salmon, bacon or mushrooms, the dish’s anchor of house-made hash browns is what has it in contention for one of the state’s best bennies.

Tasting of rosemary, the potato cakes boast an exterior as crunchy as a freshly picked apple, only made better by the pooling piquant hollandaise.

Continuing the cafe’s mission to support local businesses, coffee comes from Burleigh’s Social

Espresso, but is as bitter as a fairytale stepmother.

There’s also iced milk-based drinks, teas and kombucha from nearby Raw Earth.

While I haven’t eaten all the eggs Benedict in Queensland to declare the version at Common Ground the best, it is certainly among the finest I’ve had to date.
