WITH the Premier as his ringbearer, a former Bronco as his videographer and a serenade from an ARIA Award winner – Damien Anthony Rossi has pulled off the proposal of the year.
The U on Sunday socials editor and Channel 7 presenter proposed to his long-time partner Jason Avery at the couple’s home in Brisbane’s northside on the weekend, at a pool party celebration for Rossi’s 55th birthday.
Rossi and Avery had an intimate guest list of about 40 for the Santorini-themed bash with attendees including the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and her parents Henry and Lorelle, former Bronco Sam Thaiday, country music icon Lee Kernaghan and wife Robby, hairdressing king Stefan Ackerie and partner Rose King and TV identities Melissa Downes, Sofie Formica and Sharyn Ghidella. Rossi’s LA-based parents, Al and Helen Rossi were also amongst the crowd.
Midway through the party, Rossi addressed his guests to thank them for joining him for his birthday with his speech suddenly segueing into a proposal, stating it would be remiss of him to not take this opportunity whilst surrounded by his nearest and dearest to propose to “the love of my life”.
The Premier – who has been recovering from a fractured ankle – hobbled over to Rossi to give him the ring to propose. As it took a bit of time to reach him Rossi quipped “What’s taking so long..you got a broken foot or something??”
Rossi then went down on one knee and told Avery he wanted to spend the rest of his life with him, with the proposal surprising and delighting guests.
Thaiday filmed the whole proposal on an iPhone (following a request from Rossi’s 84-year-old father, Al) which resulted in finding himself amusingly in the middle of the proposal at one point.
Rossi says Avery has made him the happiest man in the world and the pair are currently discussing a potential wedding dates with Rossi having said to his guests that he was partial to the date 10/10/20 given there would be no excuse for Avery to forget their anniversary.
