Like an impressive, rustic barn with corrugated iron roofing and wall panels, timber cladding, heavy wooden posts, and potted plants and herbs, new Kedron cafe Farm House serves up a little slice of the country in Brisbane’s suburban inner north.
Its elaborate rural fitout is the vision of the Scott family, and it’s a refined version of what you would expect to find tucked off a dirt highway in outback Queensland, not just metres from the seemingly endless stream of traffic coursing down busy Gympie Rd.
But it’s this tribute to the bush that has city slickers rejoicing.
Not only is it country by design, it’s country by nature, with warm and charming service and food that make heroes of local farmers and producers.
A large blackboard running down one wall emphasises Farm House’s dedication to supporting Queensland growers and makers, with notes revealing the local sources of key ingredients, such as eggs, mushrooms, milk and more. And you can taste the commitment to quality.
The menu offers simple, hearty fare with a chef’s touch; think slow-cooked Spanish beans, buttermilk pancakes with popcorn butter, and classic eggs benedict on cheesy potato cakes.
There are also on-trend options, such as a summer bowl with saffron rice, mushrooms, avo, broccolini, hummus, tomato and savoury granola, or my breakfast gnocchi.
The Italian favourite is a rustic delight, with marshmallow-like nuggets of potato in a burgundy tomato sauce seasoned with strips of bacon and lashings of grated parmesan, all crowned with a runny-hearted poached egg.
There is also a cabinet full of sweet and savoury treats to eat in or take away, including salads, tarts and a sensational carrot cake. Its moist, nutmeg-spiked crumb is studded with whole walnuts and glistens with delicate ribbons of carrot hidden by a pepita, cranberry and dried apricot-jewelled cream-cheese frosting that’s thicker than the cake itself. Or try the buttery quiche. Its thick pastry shell blooms with salty feta, cheddar, spinach and sweet potato.
Old-school milkshakes and thickshakes are a speciality here, sitting alongside smoothies, fresh juices and frappes. But the coffee is the true star. Ground to order, the beans have no bitterness, delivering a caffeine hit that’s smoother than the Fonz.
Kedron locals – especially the new-mum set – have already fallen in love with Farm House, and with its rural charm, it’s sure to have others seeking out a taste of the country just outside the heart of the city.
