'Unthinkable' scenes spotted at ALDI as their 'best' sale hits the middle aisle

Shoppers are sharing how shocked they were to see it, with many asking "what happened?"

For years, ALDI’s infamous Snow Gear Special Buys have been considered the pinnacle of the aisle of dreams. If you haven’t lined up at the crack of dawn to get your pick of the lot, you certainly know someone who has.

This year, in its 20th year, ALDI advertised a ‘premium’ version, complete with over 65 products under $100 to keep the whole family warm on a budget.

But, since the weekend’s launch, it’s become clear - no one cares anymore.

Get your snow gear… or don’t

When it was announced a few weeks ago that ALDI’s snow sale would be heading back to the middle aisle, it was all pretty… quiet.

Sure, some people are always going to be excited - your yearly skiers, parents with kids heading to the snow on camp, and anyone in need of a budget thermal. And, the clips of people rushing through the doors at select stores on Saturday reflected that.

But, overall, it didn’t quite reach the hype of previous years, and now two days since the sale started, we’re seeing that that lack of hype translated into a lack of sales.

Kidspot’s Lifestyle Editor, Leah, headed down to her local store to see it for herself - and the sights were dismal.

“There was so much stock I was so shocked! I remember lining up at the crack of dawn to get stuff it was so popular, now people weren’t even looking there! Just walking straight past,” she said.

What’s changed?

If it’s been so popular for years, why has the hype died down so suddenly?

According to some mums, the prices just aren’t low enough anymore - comparing them to similar prices at Anaconda.

“You can basically get the same stuff at anaconda for the same price. Not worth it anymore,” said one social media user.

Others say the price to go to the snow is getting too hefty, meaning the gear isn’t needed.

“Plenty at my local left. Skiing in aus is just so $$$$$. Rather use that $ for an OS trip!” said one shopper on Facebook.

“That's exactly what we did. Just came back from Hawaii Big Island instead of going to Perisher in July,” another agreed.

“So many wouldn’t be able to afford to go away, that’s my opinion,” said a third.

For others, it’s not so much that the hype has died down - just that they’ve bought gear in the last few years, and aren’t in need of anything new just yet.

So, if you do happen to be in need of some new jumpers, shoes or fuzzy socks, head down to your local ALDI - chances are it’s still fully stocked.

Or, head to Facebook Marketplace or eBay, where hundreds of pieces are already being sold from both this year, and years passed online.
