Traffic fines issued in every Queensland region since 2020

Police data reveals every traffic fine issued in every Queensland region over the past two years, including one Brisbane region where 670,000 motorists were caught on camera speeding.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

Police data has revealed the number of traffic fines for every Queensland region over the past two years as drivers rank their biggest pet peeves on the road.

Data from Queensland Police Service has revealed the areas where the bulk of the state’s traffic fines have been handed out.

North Brisbane topped the list with more than 670,000 fines issued in the 2020-2021 financial year for speeding by less than 13km/h over the limit, both from mobile cameras and fixed cameras, plus an additional 162,000 for speeding up to 20km/h over the limit.

North Brisbane was also in the spotlight for running red lights where there were 30,282 fines issued in the 12 months.

Meanwhile, there were more than 110,000 fines issued to toll evaders.

The Capricornia area was the next highest in the state for speeding with 8142 fines issued in 12 months for speeding by less than 13km/h followed by the 5490 fines issued in South Brisbane for speeding under 20km/h over the limit.

It comes as a survey from RACQ revealed the biggest frustrations for drivers on Queensland roads.

According to 95 per cent of respondents, the biggest pet peeve when driving is when cars don’t leave enough space between themselves and the car in front.

RACQ spokesman Tristan Vorias said tailgating was not only annoying, but also extremely unsafe for drivers on the road.

“Nearly every driver listed tailgating as a pet peeve and for good reason. It’s unnecessary, inconsiderate, and significantly increases your chance of having a crash,” Mr Vorias said.

Coming in second place was drivers who throw litter out of their cars with 94 per cent of those who were surveyed putting it on their list.

Drivers who increase their speed when others are trying to overtake, drivers who aren’t courteous and drivers who use their phones all topped the list as well.

Mr Vorias said these behaviours were not only disrespectful to others on the road, but also dangerous.

“Already this year, more than 230 people have died on Queensland roads and we need to be

looking out for each other to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely,” he said.

“Many of these bad driving behaviours also attract significant penalties and with cost-of-living

pressures front of mind for so many Queenslanders, a fine is a complete waste of cash.”

According to Queensland Police Service, in September this year, there were more than 3400 traffic and related offences in the month.

This was down from August however which was the highest month of traffic and related offences in the year with just under 4000 across the state.
