The viral IKEA desk hack
So, what's the genius idea?
All you need to do is place two IKEA chests of drawers at a strategic distance apart, then top them with a sturdy timber plank.
Then voilà! You'll have an instant, stylish, and most importantly, practical DIY desk unit.
The woman who posted the original photo of the hack, Esther, used the IKEA MALM Chest of Six Drawers (160x78 cm).
You'll need two of them, and they retail for $269, so it's not the cheapest hack out there. However, it still offers a cost-effective alternative to buying a large desk unit outright.
You could also source your own cheaper drawers from somewhere else and the hack would work just as well. For example, Kmart has a dupe of the MALM drawers for just $189.
Thousands share their unique spin on the hack
Esther's post quickly racked up 2.3k comments and inspired others to give the hack a go and share their own unique spins and personal touches.
One popular trend-within-a-trend that emerged was people using it in their kids' rooms.
The hack has also made its way outside of the home and made its mark in people's workplaces as well.
One woman shared how she turned the DIY desk into a chic and functional workstation in her beauty salon.
Others used theirs in their bedrooms as makeup dressers as the spacious drawers can be used to keep clutter out of sight, while the bench top has ample room for a mirror and lighting.
And of course, people just used theirs as desks. But how fancy do they look?!
You'll never want to go into the office again!
