The unlikely shop Aussies are turning to amid soaring supermarket costs

"I can't believe we're getting ripped off like this," someone commented after seeing the $54 discount.

An employee at a discount variety store has shown the massive savings that shoppers could be making if they ditch traditional supermarkets.

Taking to the Markdown Australia Facebook group, the employee’s mum, Yvette, said her daughter who works at The Reject Shop gets “physically hurt” by seeing how much people are paying at places like Woolies, when the same products are available in her store for a fraction of the price.

"She is physically hurt to see some of the prices at Woolworths"

“My daughter works for The Reject Shop and it almost physically hurts her to see some of the prices at Woolworths. Here is an example that has us wondering why,” the mum wrote.

She then shared a photo of Oral B White Whitening Emulsions for sale at Woolies for $60 next to a photo of the same product at The Reject Shop for just $6, making it a $54 discount.

Even at places like Chemist Warehouse, the whitening kit retails for around $45.

"The price difference is crazy"

People were shocked at the side-by-side comparison, saying they were “disgusted” at bigger supermarkets ripping off shoppers when so many are already under financial strain.

“'That's disgusting,” said one, while another wrote: ''All this post has made me want to do is go to The Reject Shop tomorrow.”

“Would do the same job as well. Don’t see the point of spending ridiculous amounts,” remarked another shopper.

“Price difference is crazy. I buy my Vanish powder 2 kg bucket at The Reject Shop for $20 and at Woolies, it’s $42!” shared another group member.

Then this person wrote: “If I have time, I always check The Reject Shop first.”

How do they get their products so cheap?

But the post also left a lot of group members speculating about how The Reject Shop manages to sell its products for such a low price.

“It would be a parallel import,” remarked one. “The quality would be different.”

Another stated: “It’s quality control items that didn’t pass the requirements.”

“I’m pretty sure they sell consumables that are past their best-before date, that’s why they can sell things for cheaper,” wrote someone else.

According to The Reject Shop’s Quality Guarantee, all products comply with Australian Consumer Law and are within their best-before date.
