Sleeping with a partner isn't always easy, but instead of sleeping in separate beds or investing in a new mattress, the Scandinavian Method states all you need is an extra duvet.

If you’ve ever shared a bed with someone you’ll know it’s not always the most smooth-sailing affair.

Some people run hot, others cold, and tossing and turning is a surefire way to keep your partner awake far longer than they want to be – but if you’ve gotta roll you’ve gotta roll, right?

Turns out the Scandinavians, as usual, have a solution to upgrade your sleep, and they’ve finally let the cat out of the bag.

The Scandinavian Sleep Method is blissfully simple. Unlike other sleep saviours touted on social media, it doesn’t require a thousand-dollar mattress or scientifically formulated foam pillows. There are no sleep masks or essential oils or even separate beds. All you need is an extra duvet.

Rather than sharing one between two people, which is a recipe for someone ending up steaming hot or totally bare, the Scandinavian method states that each person in the bed should have their own duvet.

Now that doesn’t mean you end up boiling under the weight of two quilts, rather each person has their quilt folded in half on their side of the bed, or overflowing onto the floor.

There are multiple benefits to a Scandinavian arrangement; firstly, couples with wildly different thermostats can pick a duvet that suits them without needing to compromise with their partner, and thus on their sleep.

It also supports a better rest as having the freedom to toss and turn or move into a different position won’t disrupt your partner, and you aren’t hamstrung by the choice between comfort or a comforter. This is great if one person gets up throughout the night too, and them throwing off the duvet won’t jerk you out of your peaceful slumber.

Not that it’s important, but it can look pretty chic too. As Bed Thread has demonstrated, having two quilts overlapping in the centre of the bed means it flows over the sides of the bed frame, adding a certain hotel-esque aesthetic to the whole arrangement. Not important, but quite satisfying.

While there are many things that can impact sleep, like blue light, anxiety, and light pollution, the person you lie next to plays a pivotal role in how well you sleep each night.

A lack of sleep has a direct correlation with stress, anxiety, weight gain, dull skin and even a shorter lifespan, and with more and more attention being paid to sleep these days, individuals and couples are rightfully going further to secure a peaceful night’s rest.

Some couples even opt to sleep in separate beds to ensure they catch their Zs each night. But while sleep divorces are of course a viable solution, it is always nice to sleep with a partner when you can – and great for intimacy within the relationship.

So it seems the Scandinavians have done it again – and all the rest of us needed was an extra duvet. We’ll see you at Ikea.
