Following his break-up from ex-girlfriend Elle Whittaker last year, Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac says he plans to keep his next relationship out of the public eye.

In a candid conversation with his former colleague Samantha Armytage, the Gold Logie nominee confessed that he felt “burnt” by the public interest in his romance, which ended just months after he announced it live on-air.

“At the time, I was happy and I felt like I didn’t have anything to hide. So I did share,” he told Armytage in the latest episode of her podcast, Something To Talk About.

“Yes, when it doesn’t work out or it doesn’t go the distance, there’s definitely interest because people can become invested. I understand it.”

When asked about the break-up, he said, “I don’t regret how that played out, it was a learning experience. And I don’t regret that relationship. You learn and you grow and you take things from different relationships.”

Joking that a lot of women have “a thing” for weatherman, Armytage asked if the popular presenter has been inundated with Instagram messages. “You are a single man in television with a huge job, you’re very funny - that’s like catnip for most women,” she said.

“Maybe you’re seeing something that I don’t,” said Mac. “The evidence is on social media. What am I doing on Saturday night? I’m dressed up as a crayfish with Dr Chris Brown playing guitars on a bale of hay. So yeah, I’m really killing it with the ladies.”

Mac and fellow television presenter Dr Chris Brown formed a cover band last year called Tone Deaf Leopard, in the hope that their songs and silly costumes would entertain Australians through lockdown.

“Are you two just living your best lives, and trying to pick up young-ish women on Instagram?” asked Armytage.

“Absolutely not,” said Mac. “There’s old-ish women as well.”
