Top last minute online Christmas gift ideas for every budget

These are the best last-minute Christmas gifts starting at $5 that you can get without even leaving your couch or digging deep into your wallet.

Holiday opening hours of major Aussie retailers

‘TIS the season for giving, but this Christmas socks and candles may not satisfy everyone.

The hottest gifts are digital or printed vouchers offering memorable experiences — from weekend getaways to pamper sessions — as Australians look to make memories, spoil loved ones and support local businesses after a challenging year.

“The best part of the virtual Christmas gift is that rather than searching hours for a present and frustratingly settling on something that may end up in the junk cupboard, you can instead purchase an experience or have your loved one or friend buy what they want,” retail specialist Ingrid Maynard said.

Flight Centre spokesman Haydn Long said Australians are well and truly ready to take off for a holiday after being stuck at home for much of this year.

A gift card can help travellers either extend or upgrade their holidays.
A gift card can help travellers either extend or upgrade their holidays.

“We’ve seen a surge in bookings as travellers throughout Australia have sought to release that pent-up demand. And a gift card can help travellers either extend or upgrade their holidays,” he said.

Meanwhile health and wellbeing memberships and subscription gifts are also popular choices, proving that people are investing some thought into personalised vouchers rather than just looking for an easy, generic Christmas gift.

“Holidays is the perfect time to switch off and tuck into all the shows and movies you’ve been wanting to watch, which makes the Binge gift card the ideal gift this Christmas,” Binge executive director Alison Hurbert-Burns said.

While they may not look as big or spectacular under the Christmas tree, gift cards are this year’s top ticket for shoppers.

And an unusual experience will be remembered for a lifetime while an ordinary gift may be quickly forgotten.

There’s been a surge in eGifting for outdoor activities during the festive season.
There’s been a surge in eGifting for outdoor activities during the festive season.

Australian eGift card provider Prezzee has reported a 250 per cent surge in digital gift cards as more people turn to eGifting during the festive season.

“Coming out of lockdown and isolation, Aussies will be looking for ways to connect with friends and family and enjoy activities away from home,” Prezzee CEO Tony Karp said.

“We expect to see an uplift in sales of experience eGift cards over Christmas and into 2021.”

Adam De Pasquale of digital platform GIFTA said customers are keen to give a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“The variety of experiences offered on GIFTA — including adventure, travel or dining — make us a destination to assist people in creating unforgettable memories,” he said.

Coles general manager for health and home, Jonathan Torr, said gift cards have become one of the supermarket’s fastest growing categories.

“Customers can pick up the perfect Christmas gift for their loved ones, from experiences to fine dining and fashion (by) over 90 retailers nationwide, during their grocery shop,” he said.

This is the first Christmas Westfield will be offering its digital gift card to consumers.

“Our customers are loving the new digital option that allows them to send their gift via email straight away or schedule for Christmas Day,” a Scentre Group spokesman said.

From a pampering spa-style escape to a weekend shopping haul, swapping presents for an experience is a nice surprise for many and extends the Christmas cheer into next year.

Mum-of-two Lyndle Richards said gift cards offer lasting memories, versus ‘big wow’ gifts often forgotten in weeks.

“I love to give something I know people would enjoy but wouldn’t always buy for themselves,” she said.

Think outside the box with these ideas to give the gift of experience this Christmas.
