This Father’s Day, families are proving that the rising cost of living won’t stop them from gifting presents and getting together to raise a glass, all in an attempt to honour every father figure across the nation.
In the lead-up to the event (September 4), Australians are forecast to spend $735m on gifts, with an average amount of $95, according to the Australian Retailers Association.
More than half plan on buying a gift that’s environmentally friendly while 27 per cent will buy their gifts online.
Alcohol and food (28 per cent) top the most popular purchases, followed by clothing and footwear (18 per cent) and gift cards (14 per cent).
“We expect consumers will enjoy a dining out experience with their dad or a nice bottle of red or chocolates to enjoy at home,” ARA chief executive Paul Zahra says.
“Books and hardware are also set to be popular purchases as retailers continue to ramp up their gift-giving solutions.
“Retailers are working hard to provide consumers with excellent value to assist with the ongoing cost of living challenges.”
Whether he’s the recipient of handy tools or a new gadget, every father is sure to be spoiled, says Scentre Group’s Jacqui Waine.
“Our Westfield iQ research has told us that clothing, food and drinks, and taking dad out for a meal lead the way as the most popular gift ideas for our customers,” she says.
“Almost half (46 per cent) of those surveyed plan to help their dad put his best foot forward, with apparel as their first choice for gifts.”
Bunnings’ director of operations Ryan Baker says practical presents are key.
“Over a third of Aussie dads are hoping to receive a gift card and two thirds have their eyes on tools or DIY products to tackle their next project,” he says.
A new national survey from Adrenaline shows nearly half (48%) of Aussie dads are looking to try new adventures and experiences with their kids.
“Aussie dads have told us how adventurous they are. After so many of them spent last year’s Father’s Day away from their kids, this really is the year to break free from the everyday and try something new and exciting together,” Adrenaline’s Toni Westlake says.
According to eBay Australia’s Sophie Onikul, gifts that indulge dads’ hobbies such as cars or travel are trending.
“For car fanatics, crowd-pleasers include Lego Technic, featuring functioning gearboxes, wheels and axles for cars, planes and motorbikes,” she says. “Remote control cars and diecast model cars are also favourites.
“Other classics include socks, fitness trackers, noise-cancelling headphones, phone charging mats and pressure washers.”
Arno Lenior of Amazon Australia says tech gifts such as the Echo smart speaker, Fire TV streaming stick or Kindle Paperwhite are great choices to keep dad entertained.
“For the busy dad, splash out on the new ‘Voicy’ Lavazza coffee machine, also powered by Amazon Alexa,” he says.
Big W’s Amanda Lunn says you can find all the latest gaming and grooming essentials in-store and online.
“Whether it’s a Nintendo Switch for the big kids or upgrading the trimmer, you can find it at Big W,” she says.
Adam Sunderland is among many dads eager to receive gifts made by their children.

“It’s so special getting together and enjoying the day with the kids. Whether it’s going to the park or baking in the kitchen, it really makes me feel appreciated for all the things that come with being a dad.”
