Shrek The Musical will be the first musical back at QPAC

Shrek The Musical is coming to QPAC after earlier being cancelled, and will be the first musical with a 100 per cent capacity audience.

Shrek The Musical will be the first musical post-COVID to have a full capacity audience when it opens in the Lyric Theatre at QPAC in the new year.

Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch made the announcement on Monday flanked by the green ogre himself, although this Shrek was borrowed from Dreamworld at short notice.

Minister Enoch said there was huge disappointment when Shrek The Musical, which has been enjoyed by southern audiences, was cancelled for Brisbane earlier in the year but the good news was it would be back at QPAC from January 9.

“Shrek The Musical’s season at QPAC will deliver 38 performances and an estimated 3000 shifts for artists and arts workers,” Minister Enoch said.

“It will also mean that it’s the first major musical to open at a 100 per cent capacity audience in Australia without a special exemption required since the onset of COVID-19.”

Funds from the State Government have helped keep QPAC afloat during lockdown and QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said the centre lost more than 600 performances and millions of dollar in revenue due to the pandemic.

“So we’ve been waiting to be able to make an announcement like this for months,” Mr Kotzas said.

“As soon as 100 per cent audience capacity was announced QPAC was determined to revisit the possibility of staging the much anticipated Shrek The Musical as our first large scale musical in 2021. Large touring musicals are normally planned years in advance so to pull this off so quickly is testament to the desire of our partners, the artists and crews to get back on stage.”
