Selena Gomez reveals she cannot carry her own children

‘Something I had to grieve for a while’

Celeste Barber reveals her exciting new project with Body+Soul

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, actress, singer and entrepreneur Selena Gomez opens up about the long-term implications her health struggles will have on her approach to motherhood.

At the impressive age of 32, Selena Gomez has achieved more than most will in a lifetime.

Making a name for herself as a world-famous recording artist and celebrated film and TV actress, Gomez is also the founder of the cult beauty brand Rare Beauty. Oh, and she’s held the coveted title of Instagram’s most-followed woman on the planet for quite some time now.

And there’s a reason the world can’t get enough of Gomez – her refreshing honesty and openness, most recently displayed in an interview where she opened up about a topic close to her heart – motherhood.

How to maintain good mental health and resilience

Explaining that she will not be able to carry a safe pregnancy herself, Gomez gives insight into the grieving process and her reformed approach to motherhood today.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children," she tells Vanity Fair. "I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."

“I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she continues.

The singer and Emmy-nominated actor has previously shared aspects of her long and arduous journey with Lupus after being diagnosed with the serious autoimmune disease in 2013.

In 2017 Gomez revealed to the world she had undergone a kidney transplant and has since been managing her symptoms with medication.

She has also been open about her diagnosis and experience with bipolar disorder, and in a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone alluded to the fact that she may not be able to have a safe pregnancy due to the bipolar medication she takes.

Despite not being able to carry her own children in the future, Gomez shares that embarking on motherhood by the age of 35 is still a priority for her, a feeling strengthened only by her current relationship with music producer Benny Blanco.

“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she says. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.’ ”

“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different,” she adds.

“At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
