‘Ridiculous’: Bunnings Christmas display sparks debate among Aussies

The appearance of Christmas decorations on shelves at Bunnings has sparked fierce debate among social media users.

Christmas movies that make unbelievable money each year

With more than 100 days yet to go until December 25, one shopper noted her surprise at her local store’s festive display in a post to the Bunnings Mums Australia Facebook group, writing that it seemed like “a very early start this year”.

The hardware giant, far from the only retailer to jump on the bandwagon well before the silly season, is selling a range of items including indoor and outdoor decorations and Christmas lights.

The split rhetoric under the woman’s post was reminiscent of the furore that erupts, like clockwork, with the arrival, months out from Easter, of hot cross buns in supermarkets each year.

“This is totally taking away the magic of December and Christmas,” one person declared.

“Before long they are going to have them out in June!”

“Christmas decorations will be like hot cross buns soon, all year round,” another wrote.

“This is ridiculous. Already?” a third questioned, while somebody else said it was “crazy”.

Some pointed out the seemingly premature stocking of decorations was a help, rather than hindrance.

Others, however, pointed out the seemingly premature stocking of Christmas goods was a help, rather than hindrance, particularly for households who go all-out on the decoration front.

“Not early for us who do big light displays,” one person said, noting their local Big W had Christmas goods on shelves in mid-August last year.

“Setting up will begin soon to be done in time for December 1.”

Multiple users also said being able to buy decorations now helped ease the financial pressure.

“Better this way, you can add bits and pieces every week and not drop $$$ so close to Christmas,” one said.

“Every year people wonder why Christmas stuff is out so early,” a second commented.

“Gives people the chance to save money and buy (more) later. Shops stock this stuff early because people buy it! Hardly any will be left by December.”

Another agreed, pointing out the move was “partially driven by customer demand”.

“Halloween is next month and people are working out now what they’re buying when decorating their houses for both Halloween and Christmas,” they said.

“They’re just trying to get some of that market.”
