Spectacular, fiery red creations have dominated the vote in this year’s award for Queensland’s Mightiest Mullet, but which ranga reigned supreme? See the list!

A spectacular ginger mullet years in the making has claimed the top spot in The Courier-Mail’s annual Mightiest Mullet vote for 2023 – but he faced stiff competition from fellow Queensland rangas.

If there was any doubt that red is the hippest colour of 2023’s summer, this year’s vote should put it to rest with our top three all rocking a magnificent orange mane to glory.

First, second and third places will now go on to represent the Sunshine State in the vote for Australia’s most magnificent mane and will be featured across all major News Corp Australia metro mastheads in the coming month.

Without further hair-do, check out this year’s Top.5 and let us know which is your favourite in the comments.

TOP.5 QUEENSLAND MULLETS FOR 2023

5. CAMERON DERN, 29

Dysart’s Cameron Dern is pretty proud of his mullet and it’s not hard to see why.

According to the man himself, his amazing mane gets “more love than the misso” with only top quality salon products to keep the curls and ringlets in shape, ensuring he's the centre of attention every time he walks down his town’s main street.

Many beers were drunk in the creation of his epic ‘do and it’s obviously paid off, coming in at No.5 against stiff competition.

According to Cameron, it even stole the show at his couple’s photo (see above)!

4. DAN GLEESON, 19

Both his mum and grandma dumped Dan in it by nominating him for this year’s vote, but their move has paid off with Mr Gleeson the highest ranked mullet not in a shade of red.

Obviously expertly crafted, Dan’s perfect marriage of attention to detail and flair captures the essence of the modern mullet that makes it the must-have hairstyle of 2023.

And why wouldn’t you want to look as good as this strapping Sherwood lad?

Darren McCoombe from Townsville in Queensland's north.

3. DARREN MCCOOMBE, 28

With the sharpest fringe this side of the equator yet luscious, free-flowing red curls in the rear, Darren’s effort epitomises the mullet mantra of “business at the front, party at the back”.

Already crowned Townsville’s best of 2022, Mr McCoombe’s fiery orange bowl-cut mullet is a thing of beauty and is on its way to the national vote after coming in at No.3.

2. TUA KOLYVAS, 16

Tua’s mullet journey is cut above the rest and will melt your heart.

The Ferny Grove teen began growing out his thick red locks four years ago to donate hair to make wigs with Alopecia, a condition that results in early hair loss.

Deciding to do things a little differently, he grew it out into a mullet and the rest is history.

If that wasn’t sweet enough, Tua also wanted to make sure he gave special mention to his lovely Nana for sharing the competition with him and encouraging him to enter. Awww!

All the hard work and charity has certainly paid off, with Tua coming in at No.2!

Jayce Bowers from Gladstone is Queensland's Mightiest Mullet for 2023.

1. JAYCE BOWERS, 6

Taking out the top spot in Queensland's’s Mightiest Mullet for 2023 is something of a redemption for young Jayce Bowers.

The little Gladstone champion was pipped to the post by PR Queen Kath Rose’s rockin’ do in last year’s vote, but has stormed to victory in 2023 with perhaps the greatest mullet of all time.

There, we said it.

The scariest thing for the competition is that Jayce has only been growing his thick, ranga locks for a bit over two years, meaning this could be the start of a long reign as Queensland’s mullet champ.

In his own words, it’s long, luscious and ginger... aka “glucious”. We’re inclined to agree. Congratulations Jayce!

Big thanks to all our winners and all the mullet kings and queens that submitted their photos for this year’s competition. Stay tuned for details of the national vote!
