A piece of empowering dating advice by reality television star Kristin Cavallari has been slammed online, revealing how far we haven’t come.
Cavallari, 36, was previously married to NFL player Jay Cutler; they share three children and divorced in 2020.
She got her start on the reality show Laguna Beach and The Hills but has since run the successful lifestyle brand, Uncommon James.
Naturally, because she’s an influencer, she’s also started her own podcast called Let’s Be Honest, and she recently shared a clip to her 4 million followers on Instagram where she preached that it doesn’t matter when you sleep with a man.
We’ve all heard the debate that you should put off having sex with a man to keep him interested. Its outdated advice that makes it seem like a woman’s worth is somehow tied up in her sexuality.
“How many dates until you sleep with a guy?” A fan asked.
Cavallari explained that in the past, she’d bought into the idea that waiting was somehow better, and she’d make men hold out for “three or four dates” before having sex, but she’d recently realised that concept was ridiculous.
“I don’t think it f**king matters,” she claimed.
“It doesn’t f**king matter! If you sleep with him the first or the tenth date. If there is chemistry and feelings there, it doesn’t matter,” she explained.
You’d think in 2023 that the advice to sleep with someone you’re interested in based on when you want to rather than out of fear they’d lose interest wouldn’t be controversial, but the clip she posted spawned endless comments of people slamming her.
The gist was that by telling women to do what feels right for them, Cavallari told them not to respect themselves.
The comment section was rife with misogyny, and other women were spewing plenty of it.
“Trash advice,” one complained.
Another claimed sex was not something that should be thrown around “casually”, and someone else said it was the “worst” advice to give young women in today’s society.
Yes, apparently, telling women to do what they want rather than base their worth around how demure they are … is terrible.
“Is this how you would want your daughter or someone who marries your son to view intimacy?” One asked.
Another claimed the advice was “disturbing”, and someone else said it was “terrible” and chemistry was no indication of if you’re with the right person, while one urged for other women to have some “self-respect” and not follow that advice.
There were also people claiming that Cavallari was in no position to offer her opinion because she was divorced, and then there were some genuinely disgusting comments.
Some men were commenting, sharing how they respected women less if they had sex with them early into a relationship.
“As a man, I’m sorry, but I think less of a woman that sleeps with you on the first date; maybe that’s not fair, but it’s how I feel,” one shared.
“Why buy the cow when the milk is free?” another asked.
Cavallari’s advice has unearthed how sexist the world still is in 2023.
