Callum Joynson took his bride-to-be, Maddison Spencer, on a helicopter ride to the top of a mountain in New Zealand to propose.
“We were posing for a photo when he got down on one knee – the pilot knew the whole time! He’s such a romantic man, I didn’t suspect a thing,’’ Maddison says of the special day.
The Toowoomba couple, who met on Tinder six years ago, married on April 30 this year at beautiful Gabbinbar Homestead.
On the day, they surprised guests by setting off fireworks behind them when they cut their wedding cake.
“We didn’t tell anyone so it was a complete surprise – it was magical,’’ Maddison says.
Their first dance was to Part of Me by The Coast, and they honeymooned in Port Douglas.
How did he propose?
We were on holiday in Queenstown, New Zealand, and Cal organised a helicopter flight up to Cecil’s Peak. It was covered in a thick layer of snow and we were posing for a photo when he got down on one knee.
What was the standout moment of the day?
Oh gosh, how do you pick (just) one?
Having my dad walk me down the aisle and seeing Cal’s face will be something I will never forget.
I also loved walking into the reception as husband and wife knowing we were going to have the best night with all of our loved ones.
What would you do differently?
Honestly, nothing. The day was so perfect for us.
What would you spend more or less on?
I’m a sucker for details – I changed my mind about five times when it came to floral arrangements.
On the day, everything fell together perfectly.
One thing you wish people told you about planning a wedding?
That it goes so quickly.
Best advice for other couples planning a wedding?
Weddings are hard to plan; however it certainly throws a spanner in the works when trying to plan a wedding in the middle of a global pandemic. At the end of the day there are
going to be things that are out of our control,
but as long as you have one another, you’ll be able to get through any curve ball life throws your way.
Did Covid have an impact on your wedding?
We were incredibly fortunate that our wedding wasn’t affected by Covid.
About four weeks before our wedding we did have a slight scare when Brisbane went into a snap lockdown.
We weren’t sure if the lockdown would end in time, or what restrictions would be put in place.
I do, however, have close friends who have had to cancel their wedding which has been really hard to see, especially when we were able to go ahead with ours. Also, be easy on yourself and surround yourself with loved ones.
