‘The bridal party got stuck in a lift’: Bride’s hilarious wedding drama
This Gold Coast couple - who met on a sailing trip in the Greek Islands - had a very eventful wedding day, with more than one drama unfolding.

When you’re marrying a man called Mr Ring, you’d better design a pretty fancy wedding band. Amy Hubbard and Fabian Ring made each other’s rings at a jewellery studio
in Burleigh.
“It was so special. Fabe made my wedding band and it has the most dainty pearls along the band with a message from Fabe on the inside,’’ Amy says.
“And I made his ring and put a message on the inside. It was a really special and sentimental experience and our rings feel like heirlooms.’’
The Currumbin couple – who have been together for three years after falling in love on an overseas holiday – married on May 1 at the Valley Estate in Currumbin Valley.
They danced their first dance in front of 130 guests to You Send Me by Aretha Franklin, before honeymooning in Tasmania.
How did you meet?
My dad introduced us. I was going to go on a Contiki trip on my own and Dad was a bit fearful of that. He heard of some Gold Coast people my age that he loosely knew but trusted their circles and reached out on my behalf without me knowing.
Next minute I’m on a yacht for a week in Greece with a bunch of Gold Coasters – Fabe being one of them.
Five days into yacht week in a little place called Hydra we were at a party. Fabe took me around the harbour, we were sitting on the side of the cliff and he asked me to be his girlfriend.
A year-and-a-half later we were back in Europe and he surprised me (by taking me back to Hydra) and proposed in the exact spot where he had asked me to be his girlfriend. It was quite possibly the sweetest, most romantic day ever.
What was the standout moment of the day?
Despite Covid nearly halving our wedding, by some miracle everyone from three different states (Perth, Melbourne and Sydney) was able to get there and it was such a celebration.
Also the bridal party got stuck in a lift for 40 minutes – it was their fault, they put eight people in a four-person lift.
And, five days before the wedding, my wedding ring fingernail got completely ripped off. Fabe glued it back on.
What would you do differently?
Nothing.
Best advice for other couples?
Be as authentic as possible and remember what’s important – don’t get hung up on the little things. I got ready in my house, with my loved ones, baby niece, nanna and dogs around.
Original wedding plans?
We booked the Valley Estate in 2019. We went there with Fabe’s best man (a builder) and it was just a paddock. (The owner) Cherie said to us: “We are building a wedding venue here, do you want to be the first?” And we said yes. Then we just hoped with every bone in our body the day would be OK.
A week before the wedding, Perth went into lockdown and I was heartbroken as a lot of my most important people were coming from Perth.
With less than 48 hours to spare, everyone came out of lockdown for the first time in months. All of the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth people were there. We are so grateful.
