‘Strip Tease, ‘Sweet Thang’ and ‘Morning Glory’: Clayfield’s fun risque cafe

With a cheeky title and some memorable menu items on offer, this is a cafe to remember.

One night stands are often frowned upon, but I can certainly understand the appeal when they’re this good.

Don’t worry, you haven’t accidentally started reading a sex column. I’m not even talking about getting horizontal with someone you have only just met, never to see again after a single evening of passion, but rather the cheekily titled version of a chilli scramble at Clayfield cafe My Mistress in Brisbane’s inner north.

The promiscuously named eatery leans heavily into its concubine moniker, featuring a debaucherous array of dishes such as the “Strip Tease” (Southern fried chicken and waffles), “Sweet Thang” (brioche French toast), and “Morning Glory” (bacon and egg bagel).

The One Night Stand ($25) should possibly be renamed “Marriage Material” because indulging in it just once is almost guaranteed to leave you lusting for more.

Possibly the best version of a chilli scramble I’ve had, it’s every bit as hot and heavy as its provocative tag would suggest, packed with real heat courtesy of a chilli oil splashed across the plate and over the soft, silken eggs, with ribbons of red chilli throughout to raise your blood pressure even higher.

Sitting on garlic-buttered, toasted sourdough, encircled by rings of chorizo and squirts of chimichurri, it’s the culinary version of a passionate and wildly intense holiday fling in the Mediterranean.

Just as good – or even better according to my breakfast date – is the cafe’s ode to the ultimate seductress, Marilyn Monroe, with the Eggs Marilyn ($24).

This version of eggs benedict is just as scene-stealing as the actor's rendition of Happy Birthday Mr President, with two perfectly poached eggs under a satiny sheet of hollandaise reclining over crispy layers of freshly toasted croissant from Molendinar’s Brasserie Bread, ready to spill their creamy yolk across just-tanned bacon and wilted spinach. “Orgasmic!” my companion declares.

There are milkshakes, iced drinks, teas, chai and blissfully smooth Allpress Espresso coffee to slake thirsts, or a range of freshly made juices including an excellent passionfruit, orange, pineapple and strawberry blend ($9).

Or for a boozy brunch, the cafe, which also turns into a wine bar of an evening from Thursday to Saturday, serving a globally influenced array of tasty snacks, offers a clutch of vinos by the glass and bottle, three beers, and a trio of cocktails including a spicy version of a Bloody Mary.

While the food is an undeniable standout here, it’s the charismatic, charming and downright likeable service which will convince diners to stray away from their regular cafe. The staff are warm, engaging and highly knowledgeable, whether you’re simply picking up a coffee from the grab-and-go, caffeine-slinging shipping container out the front, or sitting down to a full meal ordered using your phone by scanning a QR code.

The staff are also adept at managing the large crowds which regularly line the footpath outside the cottage-style cafe waiting for a table in the rustic timber and dark brick-heavy interior, or the romantic, vine-wrapped front courtyard shielded from the noise of busy Sandgate Rd by verdant hedges that hug the perimeter.

Flirtatious, fun and full of heart, My Mistress is a cafe you will want to have a love affair with.
