King Arthur cafe reveals the ultimate croissant combo

Forget the cruffin or cronut, a Brisbane cafe has released the ultimate croissant hybrid that will have you coming back for more.

What does it take to make the world's best gelato?

What happens when you combine a croissant with apple crumble and a waffle?

You get pure genius is what.

The talented crew at Fortitude Valley’s King Arthur Cafe have long been known for their creative, out-of-the-box breakfasts, but this indulgent invention ($18) takes the cake (or croissant or waffle or crumble?).

Topped with a doughnut-like ring of hard-set semifreddo, the cruffle(?) features laminated pastry enveloping a sweet, sticky apple pie filling before being pressed into a waffle shape and dusted with a cinnamon sugar, biscuity crumb.

Despite not normally being a fan of sweet breakfasts, I devour it with all the gusto of a five-year-old let loose at the lolly table at a kid’s birthday party.

As well as its commitment to creative thinking, King Arthur has also become one of Brisbane’s best brunch spots for its use of local produce – much of which comes from Loop Growers, about 30km northwest of Brisbane, which takes the kitchen scraps of cafes, restaurants, bars and breweries, and uses it as organic matter to grow its crops.

The cafe’s focus on seasonal ingredients and making them the star manifests in an all-day menu that runs from simple scrambled eggs ($20) with the soft Italian cheese stracciatella, greens and fermented chilli to a farm bowl ($19), packed with whatever is best from Loop that day.

The humble omelette ($21) even gets an overhaul here, taking a thin, eggy base and layering it with slices of browned sausage, shreds of vinegary house-made kraut to offset the fattiness, chunks of potato and a curried ketchup with so much punch it could take out a UFC title.

There’s also a variety of salads and sandwiches available in a refrigerated cabinet for a quick and easy option, plus their super sexy array of sweet treats, which fill the counter and may include a dense and more-ish lemon pound cake with fresh mulberries or a rhubarb and custard tart.

Coffee is from Sunshine Coast brewers Sundays Coffee and is as smooth as easy jazz; while there’s also a range of kombucha, teas, smoothies, shakes, cold-pressed juices, chai latte and hot chocolate. Or, after 10am, diners can sip on the hard stuff with a handful of wines, beers and cocktails.

Service is friendly and reasonably efficient at the minimalist-looking cafe, but it’s the food and the coffee that keeps diners returning.
