I was so nervous I threw the ring at my bride-to-be

Planning a surprise wedding proposal for his high school sweetheart had the groom in such a state a mishap occurred.

Brendan took his partner Blaize to her favourite eatery in Montville, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, telling her it was to celebrate both their birthdays, which are quite close.

“I booked us into this restaurant called Montville Cafe Bar and Grill, and I told the staff it was for our birthdays,” Blaize says.

“As the staff were coming up to us singing happy birthday, Brendan was trying to grab my attention and say a heartfelt speech, but I was focusing on the staff bringing the cake.”

The staff left and it was up to Brendan to finish his proposal. He nervously pulled out the ring and shouted “Marry me!”, accidentally throwing it at the bride-to-be.

“I froze and had no idea what was happening. I picked up the ring and he asked me again. Of course, I said yes!” Blaize recalls.

The couple married on September 18 last year at Hideaway Weddings Orchid Deck at Beerwah, 75km north of Brisbane, in front of 59 guests before honeymooning in Cairns for 15 days. “The plan was the Maldives but with COVID-19 we could not go,” Blaize says.

“We drove up to Cairns so we could explore and travel to a few places such as Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest. Not only was it our honeymoon, but it was also the first family holiday with our son, Jaygar.”

How did you meet? Blaize: My cousin was best friends with Brendan and introduced us at Gympie State High School in 2013. It was not until 2014 when I was in Grade 12 and Brendan in Grade 11 that we started dating, Brendan did chase for nearly that whole year though.

Theme: I wanted a simple outdoor wedding. The Hideaway’s white floral arrangements and long greenery runners matched the bouquets, as well as the wood stumps aligning with our wooden coaster favours – it all tied in so well.

Why did you choose your venue? We chose The Hideaway for many reasons, but mainly the beautiful gardens.

What does marriage mean to you? Blaize: Besides knowing that I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and my love, it also means that I get the chance to have the same last name as my partner and my son.

Brendan: Marriage to me means that I get to spend the rest of my life with the one person I love the most in the world.

The highlight of the day? Blaize: When Brendan called me his wife. Also, having amazing family and friends travel to see us become one. It was so rewarding to be surrounded by so many people who love us.

Brendan: The best part of the whole day was seeing my new wife walk down the aisle towards me. I was an emotional mess and could not stop tearing up. I have never seen anything so beautiful in my life.

Planner/co-ordinator/decorator? The main reason we went with Hideaway Weddings was because they organised everything. From providing a planner to helping us decide the finer details, the decorations, the catering, accommodation, and we were able to have the ceremony and reception all at the one location.
