Jack Hutchinson will have no excuse for forgetting his wedding anniversary. It’s also new wife Fatya’s birthday.

Jack, director of Hutchinson Builders, and Indonesian-born Fatya were the first couple to wed on the GOMA Roof Terrace before 150 guests, before then partying the night away with 240 guests at their reception at Fortitude Music Hall in Fortitude Valley on June 4.

Mandailing cultural ceremonies were held in Bali to represent Fatya’s North Sumatran heritage, followed by a reception for 120 people at beachfront Villa Phalosa, a month later.

The couple, who met four years ago while studying for their Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the London Business School, have made their home at Toowong, in Brisbane’s inner-west.

Santorini and Hydra, in Greece, and Positano, Italy. Jack was inspired to go to Hydra by his love of late Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, a stay considered the highlight of the trip.

Any unique or surprising details about your wedding?

Fatya wore mother-in-law Mary-Jeanne’s veil and vintage Carolina Herrera wedding gown for the ceremony, before changing for the reception at the popular family-owned music venue. (She then changed into a Pronovias Atelier gown from White Lily Couture for the reception.) There was plenty of original music with Jack’s friends’ bands playing at the ceremony – Suicide Country Hour, and at the reception Millions, and Collar. Wines from the family’s New Zealand winery Craggy Range flowed throughout the happy event.

What was the standout moment of the day?

The ceremony! It was just so beautiful, walking down the aisle to If I Needed You by Townes Van Zandt, performed by Suicide Country Hour.

What would you spend more or less on?

Nothing – most suppliers were friends and family.

One thing you wish people told you about planning a wedding?

Jack: Be prepared to be pulled away for a lot of photographs while your friends are partying.

Did Covid impact your original wedding plans?

It was supposed to be so special because we had planned a small wedding with family and close friends at Craggy Range Winery in New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay region for March 26, 2022.

When did you decide to change plans?

In December 2021, we decided to change the venue to Brisbane. It was tough but turned out great because we could invite more people to celebrate with us.

For Jack, it felt right to have the wedding in his hometown and we ended up having the best time possible.

What helped you get through the stress of changing plans?

The understanding that a lot of things were uncertain during the pandemic. Once it was clear borders and quarantine rules were not going to change in time, the decision to move it back home was key. We got continuous support from our parents and our family, which got us through the process.

Best advice for other couples planning a wedding?

Do whatever you think you’ll enjoy most.

What would you do differently?

Nothing.
