Groom’s unusual wedding outfit surprises bride

It proved to be a perfect wedding but this bride admits there was one thing that could have been done differently.

This couple married in the middle of a tropical monsoon weather event, but thankfully the rain held off for their ceremony. Mitchell Malt, 30, and Jamie Malt (nee Harper), 28, tied the knot on March 23 with a ceremony at Maison La Plage on Noosa’s Main Beach, followed by a reception at Noosa Boathouse.

“We have travelled to Noosa many times just the two of us and each time has been so beautiful, it was actually the first time it had rained when we have been there,’’ Jamie says.

“It rained up to 40mm the two days before our wedding. You could say I was very stressed. It somehow stopped raining for our ceremony and rained right at the end for five minutes.”

The couple – who have been together for almost 10 years – danced their first dance in front of 90 guests to Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton.

How did you meet? Bride: We met at a bar, it was a mutual friend’s birthday. I was accidentally knocked over by someone and Mitch came to check if I was OK. We hit it off from then, he was polite, charming and good looking – blonde hair, blue eyes. Groom: Jamie was gorgeous and I knew I wanted to get to know her, after that night I added her on Facebook, I wasn’t sure if she was keen or not, I tease her about taking up to three business days to reply to me.

How did he propose? At the Botanic Gardens in June, 2022. It was a Wednesday morning, a rainy and cold winter day. We had a puppy Reggie, he is a staffy, he was about six months old and we thought why not go and walk him around the gardens and get a nice breakfast after. It actually started pouring with rain so we found shelter in a really cute little rotunda, I turned around and there he was on one knee. I was shocked.

Hens night? Yes.

Bucks night? Yes. We both went home early – eeeeek – couldn’t handle the alcohol. Some say we were made for each other.

How and why did you choose your wedding venue? The views of the river were amazing, the staff were so friendly and the food … incredible.

What was the budget for your wedding? We didn’t really have a set figure but we knew what we wanted to spend and we managed to stay within it. ($50,000-ish)

What would you spend more or less on? I honestly don’t think I would change anything.

How did you go about choosing your wedding dress? Bride: I actually screenshot the dress I chose not long after we got engaged, I knew I wanted to go to Kyha Studios, I loved their simple but elegant style. The first dress I ever tried on was actually the one I bought. It was the Lucia gown. It instantly felt like the one. I tried on maybe 10 in total between Kyha and Jane Hill. I loved the experience, I took my mum and my mother in law with me and it was super special to share that with them.

What thoughts did you have while waiting at the altar, then seeing the bride walk down the aisle? Groom: Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry. Just thinking how beautiful Jamie was going to look. Thinking how cool to be able to turn around and see my wife to be. Hard to put into words.

What was the most stressful part of wedding planning? I think just co-ordinating all our vendors, making sure you know what deposits you have paid and what is remaining. Just staying level headed and trusting the process.

Any unique or surprising details about your wedding? Pretty much 90 people flew up from Melbourne and Adelaide. Mitch’s brother sang a song for us which was a surprise. He sang Luke Combs’ Better Together. Also, Mitch got a custom-made suit jacket which had photos of us over the years, he picked the photos himself too and surprised me on the day.

What was the standout moment of the day? I think just seeing each other and locking eyes at the aisle was a once-in-a-lifetime feeling and it feels like such a blur but so vivid.

What was a wedding non-negotiable for you? Researching and really looking into a photographer that suited our style, you have these photos for ever – it was so important to me to choose the right photographer.

What would you do differently? Maybe get married a different month? It was apparently a tropical monsoon weather event for the week of our wedding. We have travelled to Noosa many times and each time has been so beautiful, it was actually the first time it had rained when we have been there.
