Gold Coast breakfast: Inside new Palm Springs Burleigh cafe

From the mug that says “I love you” to the top-notch service, this new eatery in one of the state’s trendiest suburbs has our reviewer raving.

Sydney's insane Lasagne Burger!

Maybe it’s the mug that says “I love you” or the impressive (and adorable) sea horse latte art adorning the top of my very well-made skinny flat white. Whatever it is, new Gold Coast cafe Palm Springs is a place that gives you the warm and fuzzies.

Taking over an old Queenslander along the highway at Burleigh Heads that previously housed the Siam Orchid Thai restaurant, the building has undergone a seismic metamorphosis.

The entire timber facade has been replaced with a dramatic, white-rendered front leading onto a cactus-bordered, rock courtyard dotted with umbrella-shaded tables.

Up the front staircase is a large covered balcony of bar seating, spilling off a beautiful, nook-filled indoor dining room made light and bright with a white and mint-green colour palette and cosy booths.

It’s retro-cool meets modern chic, straight from the pages of a glossy design magazine.

Adding to that aforementioned warm and fuzzy vibe is the staff.

Attentive, detail-focused, knowledgeable, helpful and genuinely friendly — this a young crew who understand old-school hospitality.

We call on their expertise to help navigate the all-day brekky menu, which is browsed on your smart phone, running from classics like eggs Benedict and burgers to vegan options such as burritos and wholesome bowls.

The Cali breakfast burrito ($17) is the perfect fodder for the hungry surfer, featuring a tortilla packed tight with chorizo, silky scrambled egg, cheddar, avocado, tomato and black beans. Boasting as much punch as Manny Pacquiao, it’s hearty stuff and is given extra zing with a dipping in the accompanying jalapeno salsa.

Meanwhile, the haloumi and egg burger ($15) exploding with soft, grilled Greek cheese, fried egg, rocket and tomato chutney, is a face-smearing, arm-licking success story, made even better by the addition of salty bacon ($5) as recommended by our charming waitress.

It’s the type of nosh that demands to be accompanied by one of the venue’s lip-tingling, tongue-numbing chilli margaritas or perhaps a Stone & Wood Pacific Ale from the tight drinks list, which ditches wine in favour of beer, cider and spirit-based beverages.

There are plenty of non-alcoholic choices in addition to the Gold Coast-made Therefore Coffee, such as iced velvet lattes, dirty chai, cold pressed juices, kombucha and Byron Bay teas.

Palm Springs may only be a recent addition to the Coast’s breakfast scene but if it keeps up its current form, it’s set to be equally as enduring as the classic theme it channels.
