The parents of Alyssa Postle chose to share their story with Leisa Scott in the hope another family does not endure the samefate. Their happy, kind, athletic 17-year-old died when the car she was a passenger in spun out of control and hit a pole last August.

It was school night, it wasn’t late, alcohol didn’t play a part, but speed did – with about three cars doing well above thespeed limit. Some teens involved have faced, or are facing, court.

But it’s not enough for Kellie and Troy Postle; robbed of their eldest daughter. They are campaigning for changes to roadrules to make teens safer in cars, including raising the age of P-platers to 18 and not allowing these drivers to have passengersfor at least six months.

This must-read story – for teens and their parents – reveals in heartbreaking detail the ripple effect of this kind of tragedy.

Also this week, if you’re looking for somewhere to travel in Queensland, Neale Maynard heads to Laura, on Cape York, to look at some spectacular Aboriginal rock painting. And Lesley Hunter-Nolan finds the perfect luxury hinterland weekender.
