Before Covid hit, Indigenous tourism was experiencing an unprecedented boom, with huge numbers of visitors to Australia seeking out these authentic experiences. These guides are able to give a completely fresh perspective on places and tell ancient Dreamtime stories, as well as a frank retelling of more recent history.
In today’s edition, in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland, we hero some of these operators including the first Indigenous tour guide of the Whitsundays, Peter Pryor, who is hoping both locals visiting the region and eventually international tourists can join his tour to have a new appreciation of the islands’ First People.
Tourism experts are hoping that when international borders open again this sector of the tourism industry will play a vital role in the recovery.
