Theirs started like so many modern relationships do, via Instagram.
But when Brisbane Lions player Charlie Cameron sent Caitlin Seeto a message asking for a date, it took some convincing.
“After turning him down a few times, I eventually agreed to going out for breakfast,” says Caitlin, a solicitor.
“I knew what he did, but if anything, it made me less interested initially. I was in my final year of uni and wasn’t exactly interested in dating someone who seemed like they had such a chaotic life. Now I’m very much a part of the chaos.”
The couple celebrated their wedding on October 19 last year in front of 110 guests at The Valley Estate in the Gold Coast hinterland. With a guest list of AFL players from across Cameron’s career, including Lions and Adelaide Crows players, the black tie wedding was a stunning and lavish affair.
How did you meet? Caitlin: We met at the very end of 2019. We had a few mutual friends but we first connected on Instagram. Charlie eventually messaged me and we spoke here and there for a few weeks. After turning him down a few times, I agreed to going out for breakfast. I remember he was so nervously chatty on our first date. I thought he was so kind and down to earth. Covid then hit and the AFL forced the players into a “bubble”. We knew if we were to continue seeing each other that we would have to move in together. So we did after only a few months of dating, and the rest is history.
The proposal? At Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. We often holiday there and it’s a really special place for us.
Honeymoon? We spent a month in Europe travelling through Italy, Switzerland, France and the UK.
How and why did you choose your wedding venue? Our venue is so beautiful. We wanted a venue that was run like a well-oiled machine and we knew we wouldn’t have to worry too much about the smaller details. The staff are lovely and it’s incredibly well organised.
How did you choose your wedding dresses? For my ceremony dress, I tried on so many. I had saved a Monique Lhuillier dress as my inspo photo from the very start but they’re not stocked anywhere in Brisbane. I ended up being in Sydney for a weekend and managed to get an appointment to try on a Monique dress. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one! For my reception dress, a few weeks before the wedding, I contacted Megan at Marquise Ateliér who had made my beautiful Brownlow dress in 2023. She managed to pull together the most exquisite gown in three weeks.
What was the most stressful part of planning?
I planned most of the wedding myself which was stressful at times. There are so many decisions to make and it can be hard to envisage what it will all turn out like.
Any unique or surprising details? We chose not to have any bridesmaids or groomsmen. We each had friends and family getting ready with us the morning of, which we loved but we didn’t have any formal roles for anyone. We also decided to include a personal detail on the back of each place card where we had an illustration of “Our Love Story”. This included the details of our first date, our first holiday, the year we bought our first home together, and a few other milestone moments. I think this was such a nice, personal touch. We’re lucky enough to have met so many people through footy, who have become family to us.
What was the standout moment of the day?We both wrote our own vows. It was so
special to have that moment in front of our friends and family to share what we love
about each other, in our own words.
What was a wedding non-negotiable for you? Great music, great food and a big bar tab!
First dance song? You by Dan + Shay. We played it a lot in 2021 when we road-tripped to Uluru so it reminds us of that special time.
Best wedding gift you received? We had family and friends fly in from all over the country and even had one of Charlie’s school friends fly from the UK. It was so surreal to have everyone we love in one room and we feel so lucky that everyone went to such an effort.
What were your thoughts on having a bridal party?Charlie has friends and family all over the country which makes it a bit hard to pick and choose. We also didn’t want to put any kind of pressure on anyone and hoped that all of our guests could just enjoy the day.
Top wedding hack? We chose to do a first look before our ceremony. We were so nervous the morning of and a first look put us both at ease.
Best advice for other couples planning a wedding? Make decisions based on what feels authentic to you!
