ART lovers rejoice - the Queensland Art Gallery will open to the public again from Monday June 22. The bad news? The gallery of Modern Art won’t be open until August 7 as it is currently undergoing exhibition rotations.
QAGOMA director Chris Saines said he was ecstatic that things would soon be back to normal.
“I am very pleased to announce that QAGOMA will begin welcoming visitors back when the Queensland Art Gallery reopens,” Mr Saines said.
“The decision to reopen follows the Queensland Government Roadmap to Easing Restrictions, which allows galleries and museums to open during Stage 2 of the COVID-19 recovery. The Gallery is working with Queensland Health to finalise a site-specific COVID Safe Plan.
“We look forward to welcoming visitors back to the Gallery. At a time when people are tentatively moving back out into the world, we want QAGOMA to be a place of calm retreat and when we reopen we will be taking every precaution to ensure a safe and healthy environment for visitors and staff.”
The first thing anyone should do when QAG throws open its doors is check out one of the most stunning exhibitions of indigenous art the gallery has ever hosted. And it’s a Queensland affair featuring the stunning and colourful work of the late Mavis Ngallametta in the exhibition Mavis Ngallametta: Show Me the Way to Go Home, a retrospective of her work.
That exhibition opened just as everything went pear-shaped so hardly anyone but a select few have seen it yet.
Another highlight is Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s towering light installation Boomerang. Don’t miss that.
And the much loved indigenous, Australian and international collections galleries will all be open along with the QAG store. The QAG Cafe will be open for takeaways and limited seating also from June 22.
