Qld restaurant rolls out edible tribute to artist Andy Warhol

An accomplished local chef has created an edible version of the famous Campbell’s soup can artworks, so good they might even be better than the original.

Campbell’s Soup Sales Were Declining. So It Redesigned Its Iconic Can.

Can you imagine eating one of the world’s most recognised art pieces?

Well that’s just what Queenslanders can do at the Gold Coast’s Palette restaurant inside the Home of the Arts.

To coincide with the gallery’s latest exhibition, Pop Masters, the venue’s culinary team has created a line-up of art-inspired dishes, from a lamb dish based on Andy Warhol’s camouflage self-portrait, to a chocolate explosion influenced by Roy Lichtenstein’s comic book-themed works.

But perhaps the most recognisable dish on the menu is a tribute to Warhol’s famous Campbell’s soup can instalment.

Palette head chef Dayan Hartill-Law has recreated the famous paintings in edible form, but don’t expect to be spooning tomato puree – this is a dessert version with chocolate, strawberries and cream.

“Once we learnt that Pop Masters was locked in we had around 12-14 weeks to conceptualise the full menu,” Mr Hartill-Law said.

“In trying to do something that’s going to stand up to some of the greatest artists in the world – no pressure at all – we kind of wanted to extend ourselves as far as we could go creatively.”

But the edible artworks are just the beginning of what is set to be a massive year for the HOTA team, with the gallery to host culinary legend Marco Pierre White for an exclusive dinner on May 27 for just 80 diners.

“You will be up close and personal with Marco and you will see him in action in the kitchen and he will be on the floor and do a 15-20 minutes Q&A – I think it will be an amazing night,” head of culinary arts at HOTA, David Ashford, said.
