A new brown snake lolly designed as a tribute to the Brisbane river has received the official stamp of approval from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The PM popped into Brisbane’s B105 radio studio Thursday and embarked on a taste-testing adventure with popular radio hosts Stav Davidson, Abby Coleman and Matt Acton to scrutinise the newly minted lollies, a tribute to Brisbane’s much-loved river famously referred to as the ‘brown snake’.
The sugary saga began when Stav, Abby and Matt launched a campaign on their morning show in February, stating a brown snake lolly to represent the Brisbane river was a missing link in the assortment of lollies made by Allens.
They successfully pitched it to the renown Australian confectionary company, and with their sweet dream finally realised, the B105 crew had the privilege of receiving the first three sample bags of the coveted lolly from Allen‘s, each with its own distinct flavour – coffee, chocolate, and cola.
And who better to inaugurate the official taste test than Mr Albanese himself.
The PM gamely bit into the new confectionery, declaring his preferences in a true MasterChef fashion.
The verdict was unanimous – cola emerged as the favourite flavour.
But, true to politician form, Mr Albanese didn‘t stop there, suggesting an additional flavour be added to the mix – aniseed.
“Where is the aniseed version?” the PM quizzically inquired.
Mr Albanese’s fondness for aniseed was no secret as he waxed eloquently about his love for black cat lollies, known for their aniseed flavour.
“I love black cats, black cats are my thing, it refreshes your mouth, it‘s just great,” he added.
The PM also proposed a future lolly tasting be paired with a round of Sambuca shots.
“Oh yeah, with the little coffee bean in it and you light it, now you‘re talking!” he said.
But when pushed to choose, Mr Albanese conceded, “But if I have to (choose), cola.”
The radio hosts said they hope the special batch of lollies, blessed by the PM himself, will slither onto shelves soon, giving Brisbanites and Australians everywhere a chance to taste the tributary lolly.
