'Please be careful': Mum's warning over gross strawberry find

"New fear unlocked!"

Five fruity hacks you need to know

Ever since the great contamination incident of 2018, where hundreds of Aussies found sewing needles inside seemingly harmless punnets of strawberries, you wouldn’t be blamed for cutting the fruit in half before popping it in your mouth.

Well, it seems if you’re not doing it already, you may have a new reason to do so, with one mum taking her disgusting find to Facebook.

“Please be careful!”

An Aussie mum has taken to the ALDI Mums Facebook group to share a disturbing find in her strawberries.

“Mums just a heads up, please be careful while giving strawberry to the kids,” the woman said.

In the photo, you can see a strawberry cut in half, with a worm curled up inside.

“That is full grot!”

Mums were quick to comment on the discovery with fear and disgust.

“That is full grot,” one commenter said.

“Feeling thankful I always cut mine in half now!! 😱” said another.

“New fear unlocked,” a third said.

Some even said they’d had similar experiences with fruit and veg from other stores.

“Yep, had 2 punnet last week like this. 1 from Woolies, 1 from IGA. Then had a twin pack of baby cos lettuce from woolies riddled with worms,” one commenter said.

“I had a lovely little family of worms living in my Brussel sprouts, hubby was very happy they all went to the compost bin and no sprouts for dinner😂” said another.

“These things happen”

Some said that the sighting wasn’t a concern, and is rather a good sign that the produce is fresh.

“Bugs in and on food is natural. It's a good sign that less pesticides were used,” said one commenter.

“This maybe surprising but when you eat food that is grown in gardens bugs and insects also like eating fresh food, that is why you are supposed to wash the food when you take it home, if it’s inside the fruit no one can see that for quality control unless you want to buy frozen then it’s usually sliced and someone would pick that out,” another said.

“I grow all the fruit & veg. They are grown in dirt where worms, spiders, bugs, snails, slugs, caterpillars, bees, moths etc all live. Just like farms. Even hydroponically grown they can have critters. These things happen. It means they aren’t spraying the crap out of them, so keep doing what you’re doing and cut them in half or check them to make sure there’s no critters on or in them and you’ll be fine.” said a third.

But, there is one surefire way to ensure you won’t end up with a squirming worm on your tongue - washing your produce and cutting it up to check.

“Yep that’s why I always cut the strawberries in half never know what’s lurking inside,” said one commenter.

“I've only just started giving my toddler whole strawberries, time to go back to cutting them 😳” another said.

“This is why I always cut up strawberries before I give them to my 6 year old,” a third agreed.
