Two Queensland boaties were gifted the once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to witness the birth of a whale calf.
Sunshine Coast schoolteacher Michele Adamson and her husband Mark were cruising about 1.5km off the coast of Noosa when they spotted the mammal metres from their vessel soon followed by a calf.
“It was moving fairly close to us and my husband had sent the drone up while I manned the boat so he pointed it toward the whale and managed to capture the calf just after it was born,” said Ms Adamson.
“We even saw the placenta dislodge. I’ve never seen that before and the whale was white, it just hung close to its mum having some milk, so we watched it for some time and it swam past us which was spectacular.”
Footage of a whale expelling its placenta is incredibly rare and Ms Adamson’s footage may be the first time it has been captured.
Ms Adamson has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 11 years where she and her husband have developed a passion for getting on the water where they have had multiple whale encounters.
