Serenity at the picturesque Cylinder Beach on North Stradbroke Island was disturbed once the dusky shark was first sighted and caused a flurry of excitement for onlookers and fear for swimmers.

The close encounter came at approximately 10am when the predator entered the waters between the red and yellow flags, the alarm was sounded and lifeguards sprang into

action.

Queensland Surf Lifesaver Mitch Yates said upon closer inspection lifeguards realised the shark was a four to five foot dusky whaler before he paddled alongside it in an attempt to guide it back out to sea.

“It’s just easier and quicker and the shark was much smaller than the board, it wasn’t interested in the board, probably wasn’t interested in the people either, it’s just looking for some little fish to nibble on,” he told 9 News

While sharks are common in the waters around North Stradbroke Island, a sighting at Cylinder Beach and one so close to the shore is rare.
