A fox has come off second best in a fight to the death with a python in northern NSW.
Tweed Heads snake catcher Sarah Mailey, of I’ll Catch It Snake Relocations, posted pics of the gruesome encounter on her Facebook page on Tuesday.
She said the incident happened at Terragon, near Tweed Heads.
“The python ambushed the fox, the fox bite (sic) the snake on the head so the python constricted the fox to death but unfortunately couldn’t get the fox’s jaws to open,” she wrote.
“We had to pry the fox’s mouth open to release the snake’s head. The python then tried to slither away like nothing happened.”
Ms Mailey said the python was taken to the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, there’s one less fox to worry the chooks of northern NSW.
Ms Mailey said the wildlife hospital had told her the python would have surgery on Wednesday.
“So far it’s looking likely it will survive,” she said.
