RSPCA calls for help as Queenslanders surrender their pets

More pets are being surrendered to shelters as Queensland families battle the cost of living crisis, with the RSPCA now calling for help.

QUEENSLAND’S cost of living crisis has led to a significant increase in pets surrendered to RSPCA shelters, with the animal welfare group now calling for donations to help the growing number of furry friends find their forever homes.

RSPCA Queensland Chief Veterinarian, Dr Anne Chester said the organisation had seen a 12 per cent increase in animal surrenders during July, and expects the trend to continue.

“On average, it costs the RSPCA $500 to get an animal ready to find a home – a donation of $46 will provide food for an animal in care, $80 can help cover the cost of a pet’s care for one day, and $120 can help provide specialist surgery to an animal in need,” Dr Chester said.

“With the increasing financial pressures on households, we do think these (surrender) trends could continue, so it has never been more important to support the RSPCA.”

In an effort to find loving homes for as many neglected, homeless and abused animals as possible, RSPCA Queensland is calling on the community to participate in its major annual fundraising appeal, Give To Get Them Home, to support the care of animals, as well as helping to provide lifesaving treatment for animals in need. Australian swim champion and long time ambassador for Queensland RSPCA Shayna Jack, encouraged all Queenslanders to get behind the Give To Get Them Home fundraising appeal, which has a goal to help at least 1000 pets find a permanent home.

“To help find fur-ever homes for as many neglected, homeless and abused animals as possible, I am urging Queenslanders to donate to RSPCA’s Give To Get Them Home appeal on Thursday, 6 October,” Ms Jack said.

“All donations will be matched.”
