Gold Coast influencer, Ellie “Elsa” Watson rushed her dog, Oatly to hospital over the weekend after she consumed a bag of grapes, which are one of many common household foods toxic to dogs.
After a trip to the beach, Ms Watson popped a beach bag with a bag of grapes inside on the floor of her home before heading out, only to come home to her bernedoodle having eaten the entire bag.
Ms Watson said she remembered her friend’s dog who consumed sultanas over Christmas which led to their dog spending two days in hospital.
“I quickly Googled it and knew grapes were the same and it’s extremely toxic [as] the dose for toxicity is unknown and obviously eating like a small handful could be deadly to them,” Ms Watson said.
“So, I quickly rushed to the Animal Emergency Centre Gold Coast … and they just instantly induced her to vomit and gave her charcoal and then they advised they wanted to keep her in over the weekend to monitor her and give her IV fluids.”
Luckily, Oatly has since recovered as she was taken to hospital within two hours of consuming the bag of grapes.
“It was a pretty fortunate time frame to get her there and they instantly made her vomit and a huge amount of grapes came up,” Ms Watson said.
Veterinary Director of Greencross Vets Tweed Heads Dr Timothy Harris said some of the most frequent visits they get from pet owners are dogs ingesting grapes, sultanas, chocolate, coffee, garlic, onion and corn on the cob.
“The frustrating thing about grapes is that we don’t have a toxic dose for them, so any amount consumed can be catastrophic for a dog and we are left dealing with the repercussions of that,” Dr Harris said.
“It sends them into kidney failure … Grapes are one of the unfortunate ones where if they’ve eaten anything, it can be potentially life-threatening.”
