A dog owner who was frantically searching for her pet for 48 hours has detailed how she found him clinging to a ladder in a secret underground bunker in her suburb.

Kate Barber, of Woodhill, said she was getting ready to tell her children that their dog, Happy, had died after losing him on Sunday before finding him in a bizarre spot on Tuesday.

“Nothing was showing up so we got really concerned,” she said.

“So we kept on doing everything we could. We contacted the pound, put it on social media, we had like 100 people sharing it for us.

“We were just hoping that we would see him again.”

Ms Barber said they started looking through the streets again when they heard a weeping noise.

“I’m on the road watching out for cars and then Glen’s (her partner) in this long grass, trying to look for Happy,” Ms Barber said.

“Then Glenn fell through a big hole, like a big hole, six-foot hole.

“He was not answering me. I’m like “babe are you okay,” I think he was in a bit of shock.”

Ms Barber said the grass had covered the hole so it was really hard to see but they eventually saw their dog clinging to a ladder, attached to a secret underground bunker.

“It was so emotional, we couldn’t believe we found him,” she said.

“Our hearts are full. We didn’t want to break the news that someone else was gone from the family

“I am so pleased with this outcome. We were so determined to find him.”

“It’s a miracle. We took him to the vet and he had hypothermia and we just have to nurture him.”

Ms Barber said it was incredibly dangerous that the bunker’s lid wasn’t shut.

“If it had been a kid and someone lost a kid, no one would have noticed cause they could have drowned,” he said.

“Glen didn't see the hole, and he went straight through it. If I wasn't there and he hit his head, I don't know what would have happened.”
