An Ibis has been shot down and killed with an 80cm target-style arrow in Brighton on Brisbane’s northside.
Police believe the arrow was shot from nearby wetlands or parklands when the bird was on the ground foraging.
A Prince St resident alerted police and took the animal to their home before it died.
Carseldine Criminal Investigation Branch officer in charge Kenneth Rogers said the incident was distressing for the community, as he praised the actions of the resident.
“Cruelty to animals is a punishable offence and along with the RSPCA, we will investigate this matter fully,” Senior Sergeant Rogers said.
“I’d appeal for the person responsible to come forward, likewise, I’d encourage nearby residents along Prince, Princess, Bayview and Shepherd Streets to come forward with relevant CCTV or dashcam between 9am-12pm yesterday.”
The QPS and RSPCA have launched an investigation into the event.
Sen-Sgt Rogers said anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
“I want to thank the resident for raising the alarm and providing the bird with comfort and safety after this horrendous and cowardly attack,” he said.
“I’d appeal to anyone with information to make that call.”
