/12Fashion photographer Mike Ruiz has shot Kim Kardashian and Nicky Minaj but it’s his work for Hunks and Hounds that caught our attention. Technically brilliant, Ruiz also has a keen sense of humour. Why else would he pit a bright-eyed Adonis with a droopy-eyed basset hound.
Buff bods, dad bods and cute dogs
Every year, men in uniform (firefighters, we salute you) strip down and grab some puppies to pose often in the name of charity. This is a gallery of pin-ups and Puppies. Proceed with caution.
/12The Australian Firefighter’s Calendar plays the heart strings (cue Donny Osmond’s Puppy Love) with this tender pic of a sleeping border collie pup curled up in a firefighter’s helmet. What’s not to love?
/12Cornell University’s chapter of the veterinary fraternity releases the Men of the Vet School calendar each year to raise money for the university’s Hospital for Animals as well as for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. It isn’t exclusively dogs, but this year this good boyo appeared for a star turn on the ice.
/12Another calendar to catch our eyes this year was the 2020 Dad’s Bods and Rescue Dogs from the US. Dogs with Brachycephalic syndrome (or short snouts) — such as pugs and French Bulldogs — are continuously bred, despite the fact their condition can lead to severe respiratory distress. Lucky Bulldogs Rescue is committed to rescuing these “smushie face” pups from the commercial breeding system.
/12If anyone has ever had to lift an ageing Labrador in to their car, they’ll appreciate the strength of this young man hoisting one on his broad shoulders in another Mike Ruiz shoot for Hunks and Hounds.
/12Helmut the Pug is a social media sensation with over 32,000 Instagram followers, 29,000 Facebook devotees, and a line in Pug Life merchandise on his website. It was only a matter of time before a Helmut and Hotties calendar was released with all proceeds going to Pugalug Pug Rescue.
/12With the tagline, “These dudes will make you drool more than man’s best friend”, the Hot Dudes with Dogs calendar tells it as it is. While the model here perfects Zoolander’s Blue Steel gaze, the small sheep he has hoisted on his shoulders steals the show.
/12We return once again to the master of the genre Mark Ruiz. This one appeals as the Pomeranian cradled in his left arm seems to be enjoying itself far more than any animal in a photo studio ever should.
/12The Australian Firefighters Calendar is something of an institution here in Australia. It started in 1993 with all the proceeds going to the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s burns unit. The calendar has raised more than $1 million to date. Here’s part of the reason why.
/12“When I visualised what the calendar would look like the name ‘Biceps and Bullies’ stood out to me,” says Mary Bell of Dream Team Animal Rescue, “Since our rescue mainly rescues the bully breeds.”
/12Another from “Dad Bods and Rescue Dogs”. Enough said.
/12“I love dogs and I don’t own a shirt so I thought this would be the perfect project,” says Drew Harrisberg of the Hot Guys and Rescue Dogs calendar. “It was my first time going to a dog shelter and it was really overwhelming. I walked dozens of dogs to take them out of their cage. I felt a responsibility to give them a dose of freedom while I can.” Harrisberg adopted a dog from the shelter after the first year he was on the shoot, and now the 10-year-old black staffy named Dennis (pictured), is one of the stars of the 2020 calendar.
