‘My wife found a fake nail in our daughter’s mouth after daycare’

“It was disgusting and we want the centre to apologise… but they haven’t done anything about it,” the angry father says.

Aussie childcare: How do we stack up against the world?

There’s nothing I dread more at daycare pick-up than seeing the “incident report” tag hanging off my kid’s backpack.

All the feelings of calm from having a quiet day to work without interruption leave my body immediately as I ask a carer to tell me what happened.

Usually it’s something innocent like, he’s got a small bruise from banging his head on the edge of the table, or he had to get a plaster for a scratch on his arm.

With my eldest though, the incident report always meant something really bad happened – usually it was that he bit someone, or someone bit him, he hit someone, someone hit him.

But what if something happens at daycare and no one fills out an incident report and then you discover the incident yourself?

Mario and his wife Luisa had exactly that issue when they picked up their toddler daughter at childcare and noticed the little girl had something tucked away in her cheek.

She wasn’t choking, but Luisa was shocked when she hooked her finger into her daughter’s mouth and pulled out a sharp, pointed fake nail.

“My wife messaged our daycare immediately with a picture of the nail,” Mario wrote on Reddit.

To be fair, the carers probably had no idea the little girl had stowed away such a disgusting bit of rubbish, but on learning the news, they barely batted an eyelid. Luisa was told they’d speak to the staff, and then the matter was dropped.

“No apology or asking if our daughter was ok. I was pretty angry and so was my wife.”

Mario tried to be understanding. “We know it’s hard to keep an eye on that many infants constantly, and things happen, but this could have been pretty bad.”

The commenters were overwhelmingly on Mario’s side, calling the incident “dangerous” and “revolting”.

“ I would follow up and ask what kind of measures they’ll be taking to prevent something like this from happening again,” one person said. “If their attitude is anything but sincere I would start looking at other daycares.”

“This could have turned into a way bigger issue than what it was,” said another.

“While this was an accident, the way they handed it was pretty unprofessional,” said a third person.

Many were disgusted by the idea that a carer would have long nails.

“Eew. Poop, nails,” one person said while another replied, “I know, fake nails changing diapers is just so gross and unsanitary.”
