"My daughter wanted all the kids who never get invited to parties at her birthday"

It all started when Emmy’s daughter decided that she wanted a make your own pizza party at a local restaurant for her sixth party.

As a single mum, Emmy knew that she could only afford to pay for about 10 guests – so that was the limit she gave her daughter.

“I thought she would have invited her friends… but not one of them made it to the invite list,” she explains.

“Instead, she invited all the kids who never get invited to parties.”

Emmy’s daughter attends an integrated education school – which meant that many of the children who were being excluded from parties had autism and severe ADHD.

“She said she can have a party with her friends another year - but this might be the only party for the year these kids are invited to,” she continues.

“She mentioned how sad they looked not getting an invite when they were handed out at school.”

"My daughter knew inviting these kids to her party would mean a lot"

Emmy was incredibly proud of her daughter for her kind gesture – adding that it was also a moment that made her feel like she was doing a good job as a mum.

“As a single mum, you hope you are doing enough and giving all you can to help them become a good person. It’s times like these when you think: ‘phew I have done OK so far'.”

“As my daughter has a heart of gold and can often see a side to people that others don’t see. She is very aware of other people's emotions and knew inviting these kids would mean a lot to them.”

Emmy said that the party clearly meant a lot to the children who were invited – but that her daughter also had a blast as well.

“They all had a fantastic time playing together. At the end of the day, she said seeing the smiles on everyone’s face was the best part of her birthday," she says.

“I could have easily said no to her original list and picked the kids I wanted to come to her party - but instead I let her create happiness and joy for others.

“It’s an important lesson in listening to your kids and understanding where they are coming from.”
