Mother's Day for single mums is a little bittersweet

"I'm conflicted on the day, but here are my tips to really enjoy it - learned the hard way."

Kangaroo mums bond with their joeys leading up to Mother's Day

Mother’s Day as a single mum is a conflicting day. Sure, let’s celebrate everything you do all day, every day, on your own, raising your family.

You are amazing and deserve it. Sounds great!

Except for the fact you’re a single mum and if your kids aren’t old enough to shop for themselves it’s up to you to organise anything you’ll do for Mother’s Day and any presents you’ll receive (side note - when your kids get a job it’s a GAME CHANGER).

It's a day that highlights the double duty we often find ourselves in – both the caregiver and the organiser of celebrations.

But you know what? That's just another testament to our strength and resilience.

We don't need grand gestures, we appreciate the little things and the effort put in, even if it means planning our own Mother's Day activities or buying our own gifts - at least we know we’ll get something we want!

So, if you’re searching for ideas on how to celebrate YOU this Mother’s Day. Here’s a few I like to indulge in.

Single Mum Mother's Day tips

Coffee at the local Café – Yes, obviously this is going to cost you something. Hopefully you can get away with a coffee and a couple of babycinos for the kiddos. If you feel like splurging of course grab a beautiful café breakie for the tribe.

The important part is – you’re not making it. Relax as someone else prepares your morning cuppa. Bonus points if it’s a café with a play area.

Breakfast on the Beach – Or in a park or at a lake. The location doesn’t matter so much. Just pick somewhere close and somewhere pretty. Let’s face it you’re already up early (what even is a sleep-in?) make the most of it.

If you don’t already own one camp stoves are super cheap. Easy to make your own bacon and egg rolls for a fraction of the price and a fantastic view and quality time with the kids.

Go for a hike – Yes you do take the risk of the kids moaning the entire time “how farrrr is it to the waterfall” but there are plenty of positives as well. You’re guaranteed to have fun, make memories, and spend some much-needed time out of the house to celebrate this special day. Spend a little time on socials in the lead up and you might find a local hidden gem.

Host a High Tea – Now, hear me out. I bet you’re thinking “it’s my day off”.

And yeh, sure, that would be great but we all know the reality isn’t as kind. High Teas are ridiculously expensive but having one at home is actually really easy and incredibly cheap. Get everyone to bring a plate and all you need to do is make sandwiches and bring the tea.

I held a High Tea at home last year and it was amazing. It’s super special if you can invite influential females in your life – aunties, cousins, sisters, godmothers. There are plenty of women in our lives that don’t have kids and I am willing to bet they’ll all love the chance to celebrate with you on Mother’s Day. Plus, with a few extra hands at home, you might even get out of the dishes!

Splurge on self-care – It’s all good and well for me to sit here and give you ideas on how to celebrate your day WITH your kids but I can almost guarantee you’re itching for some me-time.

If there’s one day in the year you’re allowed to splurge on you it’s Mother’s Day. Even if you don’t go for a massage or get your hair done ON Mother’s Day, at least make an appointment. You deserve it, Mum!

As Mother's Day approaches, the complexities of being a single mum can feel magnified, yet the celebration itself is a testament to our strength and love. This day isn't just about the activities or the gifts, it's a recognition our unwavering dedication to our kids.

And if you’re wondering whether anyone sees what you do and recognises the sacrifices you make – I do.

Happy Mother’s Day. You are freaking amazing.
