I'm worried my 8yo is too old to have a Bluey-themed birthday party

"She wants to invite some girls from school and I'm afraid they won't be very interested?"

How to throw a kids' birthday party

It's a natural thing to want to make our kids happy, especially when celebrating their birthdays.

Yes, natural, but not always straightforward.

What happens when we're faced with a dilemma as one mum was this week: torn between giving her eight-year-old daughter the birthday party she desperately wants, and worrying that she'll be picked on for it?

"Is eight too old?"

Writing in a parenting group, the mum explained:

"My daughter is turning eight. She has asked for a Bluey themed birthday party.

"I don’t think she’s too old at all, and plus I’m 41 and love Bluey too lol.

"I’m only asking because it seems that kids at school act so much older. My daughter absolutely loves baby dolls (Baby Alive and reborn) still loves playing house and family. She has had a hard time finding kids who also like the same things.

"She has a bestie neighbor friend who is more of a stuffy girl and they like to play Roblox together. She wants to invite some girls from school and I’m afraid they won’t be very interested? I don’t know what I’m trying to ask.

"I just wish she could find a couple girls who still like to play like little girls. It’s kind of frustrating."

"Bluey is for babies"

Most commenters on the post didn't share the mum's concerns, and were quick to reassure her.

"My daughter had a Bluey party for her eight birthday. She said some kids on her class said, 'Bluey is for babies'; those kids didn’t come. I told her ignore the haters, everyone that did come had a blast. We played Keepy Uppy , and freeze dance," one shared.

"My daughter is seven and at the beginning of this school year I found myself asking the same things, but what I have come to realize is my kid has no issues with herself and I’m not going to give her a complex just because other kids are growing up fast around her. I say enjoy the fact that your kid just want to be a kid," added another.

This parent emphasised the importance of supporting her girl, writing, "Definitely have the type of party she wants, supporting her is way more important than others and trying to please them. She is a young girl and likes what she likes. Maybe would be good idea to have Bluey invites so guests have a heads up on tone of celebration."

The mum was also encouraged to allow her daughter to 'be a kid'.

"The other kids are growing up way too fast thanks to TikTok," one mum wrote. "Eight and nine-year-olds do not need to be obsessed with Sephora like you’re seeing a lot nowadays. Let her be young as long as you can/she wants to."

Others shared their own Bluey party experiences: "I don’t think it’s too old. My nine-year-old watches Bluey. He said he doesn’t think a kid would be made fun of by most people. But who knows."

She went on to add her thoughts about kids these days in general.

"Small rant here. But I hate as a parent kids grow up too fast now. I am sure every generation says that, but I was still playing GI Joe at middle school and enjoyed Legos in junior high. This year for Christmas my nine and six-year-old boys barely asked for toys. It was already clothes, sports stuff, and video games."

People without kids also had thoughts on the party.

"Bluey is awesome. I want a Bluey themed birthday party and I'm 43," claimed one.

Many adults echoed that sentiment, including a certain 'Slippery Tom', who wrote: "Shit dude, I'm 37 and love to get baked and watch episodes of Bluey on YouTube."

You do you, Slippery Tom!
