It was Saturday night in October when 16-year-old Kiara Williams walked home from a night out.

Making her way through Greensborough War Memorial Park in Melbourne, the teen was allegedly attacked by a group of youths.

Then she felt a sharp pain in her arm and neck, but she didn’t realise what happened until it was too late.

“I thought, 'Am I dying right now?’”

She had been stabbed in the arm and neck with a boxcutter and was left to die alone in the park.

“In the back of my mind, I thought, 'Am I dying right now?'” she recalled to 9News, adding she didn’t realise she had been stabbed until someone pointed out the bloody wound on her neck.

Then her vision began fading, and her ears started ringing. “And that was scary,” she said.

Her horrified mother discovered Kiara in the park, and she was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She underwent surgery for her wounds and is thankfully on the mend.

But just as the scars appear on her arm and neck, which are a “constant reminder” of the attack, her mental health is also recovering.

Teenager slams “low life” attackers

It’s been months since the alleged attack, but Kiara still struggles with returning to her old self.

Her mum, who found her bleeding in the park, “doesn't know how to cope” following her daughter’s attack.

“This has completely messed up my mental health,” Kiara said, still visibly shaken by the ordeal.

Now she has to “keep a look out” everywhere she goes, and is terrified something like this could happen again. “Wherever I am, I always have to be cautious of my surroundings,” she said.

Even daily tasks, such as catching public transport and going for a walk, make her freeze with fear.

Speaking to 9News, she hopes to raise awareness for other young people to stay wary while walking at night and that no one deserves to live every day in fear of being stabbed.

“If you are planning on using a weapon, you're planning to use it to either kill someone or severely hurt someone; genuinely, it's embarrassing,” she said.

“It shows how much of a low life you are and that you’re looking for the attention.”
